Last week it was my first time down at Los Angeles, and it's jaw-dropping. The deserts of California are ablaze in orange, purple, gold and other flourishes of the artist's palette. It doesn't seem natural, but the season's wildflowers have again transformed the desolation into an iridescent garden. It's enough to make even old-timers awe-struck, mesmerized by the poppies, lumpen and mustard. It's just spectacular, isn't it? Look at it up the hill. The "Mojave Green" is considered the among the deadliest of U.S. rattlesnakes. Black widow spiders have dwelled in the garages. And the land is pitted with critter holes for squirrels, kangaroo rats and gophers. Whatever the price of beauty, it's not too high to deter visitors from entering the floral grounds.
