Halloween Easter Egg on Google Maps

Google included a little Halloween Easter Egg on their Google Maps Street View feature – instead of the usual icon person walking around, now there’s a witch icon.

Halloween is a holiday on the night of October 31 celebrated in various parts around the world, with people – including employees of Google – dressing up in scary (and sometimes, Google-related) costumes, lighting up all kinds of decorative lights, or carving pumpkin faces, among other traditions.

Feedburner Ad Network Syncs with AdSense for On Page Ads

Breaking news just to hand:

Feedburner seem to have quietly added a feature to publishers in their Feedburner Ad Network that allows them to sync their Feedburner account and AdSense account - at least for their on website content (ie not in your RSS feeds).

My sources tell me it is still in a beta phase but it would soon be publicly available.

I got an error message on Feedburner while Activating FeedBurner Ad Network and Google AdSense for Content.

"This service is not currently available."

Gas - Saving Money Tips

1. Shop around for a lower price, but don't go miles out of your way to get the best price. When traveling a long distance to save a few pennies, you end up spending more on car driving expenses (AAA estimates that it costs 56.1 cents a mile to drive a car in 2005 while the IRS allows a deduction of 40.5 cents a mile) than you end up saving with the lower gas price.

2. To find the least expensive gas in your local area, don't drive around looking. Hit the Internet. Sites like gasbuddy.com will let you find the lowest gas price without leaving your driveway.

3. It's best to purchase gas from a station that is busy. Gas that sits in tanks for long periods can get contaminated and lower its effectiveness. Fresh gas is less likely to be contaminated ensuring you get the most power for your dollar.

4. Avoid purchasing gas from a station that has just had a truck fill the station's underground tanks. Filling up the station tanks will stir up particles from the bottom of the tank which can clog your fuel filter and make your car run less efficiently.

5. Purchase your gasoline in the early morning or at night when it is cold outside. Gas becomes denser in cooler temperatures. Since gas pumps only measure the volume of fuel - not the density - you'll get better overall gas mileage for your money by purchasing fuel when it's cool outside rather than in the heat of the day.

6. Take the time to check your car's tire pressure each month (purchase a good-quality dial-type gauge for yourself -- pencil-style gauges and the ones mounted on the air hose are unreliable according to federal surveys). Under inflated tires reduce fuel efficiency by 2% for every pound they are under inflated. Under inflation also causes premature tire wear giving your tires a shorter use life.

7. Be sure to use your owner's manual for the correct tire pressure. The pressure printed on the sidewall of the tire indicates how much the tire will safely hold and should not be used since it has no connection to how much air should be in the tire for routine use.

8. Check your tire pressure when it is cool outside. A good time is in the morning after the car has rested overnight. Driving only a few miles to a gas station will build heat in the tire and can increase the pressure enough to give a false reading.

9. Drive at the speed limit. Cars use about 20% more fuel driving at 70 miles per hour than they do at 55 miles per hour.

10. Avoid driving fast in low gears. Driving at high speeds in the improper gear can reduce fuel efficiency by up to 40%.

11. Avoid using air conditioning whenever possible. Air conditioning reduces fuel economy by 10% to 20%.

12. Don't open windows when traveling at high speeds. Open windows on the highway can reduce fuel efficiency by 10%. It is much better to use the ventilation system.

13. Remove car racks and other items which make your car less aerodynamic when they're not being used. Leaving them on only makes your car less fuel efficient.

14. Use cruise control to maintain a steady pace on the highway to increase fuel economy.

15. Avoid rough roads. Driving on roads made of dirt or gravel can reduce fuel economy by up to 30%.

16 Don't let your car idle. Even on cold mornings, there's no need to let your car idle for more than 30 seconds. Newer cars are designed to be driven almost immediately and letting your car idle longer is a waste of gas.

17. It's more efficient to turn off your car and turn it on again than to let it idle for more than 45 seconds while waiting.

18. Remove all excess weight from your car. Many people use their car trunk as a storage space adding unneeded pounds to the car's weight. This unnecessary weight reduces the car's fuel efficiency.

19. Try to accelerate gently, brake gradually and avoid stops when driving. Gunning engines, quickly accelerating, and abrupt stops all waste fuel.

20. Try to avoid driving during rush hour periods when you know traffic will be stop and go. If you do find yourself in stop and go traffic, try to maintain a crawl.

21. When approaching hills or steep slopes, accelerate before the hill. Accelerating once on the slope will consume much more gas.

22. Service your car regularly while paying special attention to oil and filters. Blocked air flow from clogged air filters will increase fuel waste.

23. Check your car's alignment since this can cause engine drag which will also increase gas waste.

24. Periodically calculate your car's fuel efficiency. A loss in fuel efficiency is an indication of possible mechanical problems.

25. For most cars, higher octane gas is a waste of money. Regular unleaded(approx. 87 octane or so) is the least expensive and what you should purchase. It's important to remember that octane is a measurement of how hard it is to ignite the gas, not the quality of the gas. Purchase mid or high octane gas only if your engine pings, knocks or rattles when using regular unleaded fuel.

26. Don't purchase gasohol if possible. Some areas require gasahol (a mixture of gas and ethanol for your car. Ethonal is alcohol made from grain) because using it for fuel is considered a way to help farmers as well as help cut pollution. The problem is that ethanol contains only about two-thirds the energy of gasoline which means gasahol forces you to use more to go the same distance.

27. For short trips close to home, try walking or riding your bicycle. Not only will you save money on gas, you'll also get some healthy exercise.

28. When you go shopping or run errands, take a little time to plan and combine them all into one outing instead of several. In addition to saving gas, you will also save yourself time.

29. Car pooling or using mass transportation systems when possible is an excellent way to reduce your gas consumption. There is an added benefit that utilizing these methods to commute will likely result in a discount in your car insurance.

30. Refrain from "topping off" at the gas station. Gas pumps don't contain enough pressure to deliver gas well in short bursts meaning that you get short changed when you top your tank off.

31. After you have finished filling up, turn the gas pump nozzle around 180 degrees. This will drain about a half cup of gasoline into your tank which you would otherwise spill or give to the next customer.

32. Rotate your tires and periodically check them for uneven wear. Proper alignment saves both gas and tires.

33. Keep the outside of your car clean and waxed. Doing so will reduce drag and save gas mileage.

34. Keep your foot off the brake. Some people have a habit of resting their left foot lightly on the brake while driving. Not only will this will cause drag that will require you to use more gas than needed, you'll also wear out your brakes sooner.

As usual, before we edit anything in our blog, we need to login to our Blogger account. Then, go to the "Template" tab and go to "Edit HTML". Remember to click the "Expand Widget Template".

An Evil Way to Increase RSS Stats

The Secret Evil Change

So what’s the secret? This is directly related to my theory from the previous post. By default, Firefox has the “network.prefetch-next” variable set to true. When set to true, this tells Firefox to prefetch any links that a web page tells it to. So by adding a little HTML tag to my blog, I was able to tell all these Firefox browsers to prefetch my Feedburner feed. Essentially, this gets the visitor’s browser to click on and load my feed in the background without their knowledge. Here’s the code to place in the < head >< /head > section of your site:

This was just an experiment and I am not encouraging the use of this “evil” method to boost your RSS stats. Not-So-Often-Used Trick To Increase RSS Subscriptions

I am planning to create a really large post that will contain all of my ideas for increasing RSS subscribers for your site. Today I just want to share a little trick that many major players aren’t using yet.

If you’re not using email RSS, you’re probably missing out on quite a few subscriptions. Feedburner makes email RSS fairly easy to set up. You basically will log in to your Feedburner account, and will then go to ‘Publicize’. You will then find a link on the left side - ‘Email Subscriptions’. Go there and Feedburner will give you a piece of code you can paste into your site.

Most of the visitors probably dont sign up for regular RSS because people who choose the email option often aren’t comfortable with a feed reader yet. This really helps your site because people get a daily reminder that its still there.

It’s most definitely worthwhile option to try out for improving your site or blog popularity!

PR0 to PR4 in 4 easy weeks

I know lots of webmasters and SEO gurus that say that PR (google pageRank - the little green bar on the google toolbar) is not worth that much but everyone is using it as a measure.

Webmasters refuse to exchange links with you if they think your PR is inferior to their website's PR. Lots of programs (reviewme.com ...) could reject your site because of low PR, some directory owners display the list of sites ordered with PR.

So ... here is some simple steps you can follow to get your sites PR higher than it is and maybe get some extra traffic while you are at it.

1. Post your link in forums using signatures and/or places that allow website reviews, put the site url in the signature with your target keywords for titles

2. Submit to free and/or paid directories (in general the younger the directory the easier would be to get accept it in it)

3. If you have other sites put sitewide links pointing to your new website. If sites are totally unrelated subject, put the links in the footer with small letter (the link still counts).

4. Put your link anywhere you can, without becoming a spammer (everyone hates spammers)

5. Find some high PR sites and pay for a link if you have to. There is lots of projects on the internet that accept donations as low as $50 and they put your link in a high PR page. For example text link ad page has a PR of 6.

6. Using your link in comment posts. This won't necessarily increase your PR but it could give you a few visitors if nothing else.

Make Money by Channeling Stocks on Margin

I am going to share the ideas on how you can channel stocks and be your own hedge manager.

1) Start with a capital of $10,000 in your trading account

2) Read my other posts and select a stock that swings +/- $1 in a week

3) Say if (SIRI) is trading at $10, then buy 1000 shares of (SIRI)

4) Use margin, short 1,000 shares of this (SIRI) at $10

5) Assuming that (SIRI) stock moves +/- $1 in week, you will be able to earn around $2,000 per week by covering and selling your position

7 signals of a rising stock price

Let's take a look at the seven horsemen that ride along the horizon before "Anystock USA" starts to pull in profits hand over fist.

7) News and rumors: Takeovers, acquisitions, mergers, new CEO's, accounting irregularities, new product announcements, and world events are just a few situations that tend to effect the price of the underlying and one sign to look for when your fishing for winners.

6) Options: As you sift through the option chain it is fairly easy to see where the speculation lies. Ultimately, high open interest on any strike price means that someone is most probably hedging their positions but it could also be used as a clue to future events, or at least anticipated ones. The higher the open interest, the more it catches mine.

5) Analyst Upgrades: When Goldman Sachs, UBS, Lehman Brothers or any of the other top financial firms upgrade a stock or initiate coverage, there is a good chance that price movement will be on the up-and-up.

4) Stochastic: This handy formula identifies overbought and oversold points at which you should watch for price reversal. Investopedia will break down the math for all you engineers out there.

3) MAC-D: Moving Average Convergence / Divergence can be a very powerful indicator, especially when combined with Stochastics. Using one to confirm the other is a great way to super-charge your screening process. As with number 4, see the online investing encyclopedia for details on how this works.

2) Volume: Almost always precedes price. When you look at a chart of a stock that has already made a large move, usually a few days before, the volume moved slightly above average and the price did little or nothing. This is one of the more powerful clues for those who know how to read into it.

Last and perhaps the most valuable and accurate indicator of a raising stock is price movement. When you stop moving forward, you automatically move backward. If you throw an apple up in the air it will lift, lift, lift and then slow to almost a stall before it starts to drop back down. (It just happens so fast you may not be able to see the stall). Looking at charts and numbers is much easier to see when something has slowed or stalled from its current momentum.

If you wait for all 7 horsemen to appear before making an investment, you may find your time better spent watching paint dry. These are however, seven ironclad keys that you may use to boost your bottom line.

Tips for improving your credit score and keeping credit cards open

CardData.com recently announced that the average US household has over $10,000 in credit card debt alone, and that debt ceiling is rising every year. With concerns about a lagging economy, oil prices, and political turmoil abroad, worrying about your credit score is probably not another worry you need compounded to your list of concerns. Here are a few ways you can improve your credit score and keep those credit cards open.

1) Pay your bills on time. This one may seem obvious, but it's on that a lot of people miss out on. Paying your bills on time means that you must make at least the minimum monthly payment every month, without missing a single time. Each time you miss a payment, the folks at the credit card companies get nervous, and, like startled wildebeest, it doesn't take much for them all to start stampeding towards high credit fees of 20% or more. The best way to avoid this unsightly event is to only have as many cards as you can pay off reliable. That will also help show that you don't take on more credit than you can handle.

2) Don't use more than 50% of your credit limit. If you need to use more than that, consider calling your credit company and asking them for a "credit line increase." This will help keep you out of the FICO gallows and will also improve your score because a higher limit means that the normal balances you ran up before will now take up less of your credit limit, which is a good thing (but obviously only if your spending does not increase with your credit line - be wary of this). This is what credit card companies call your credit ratio, and it can account for as much as 30% when they determine your FICO score.

3) Get - and keep - your cards for as long as you can. This shows the credit companies that you have the financial stability to stick with it and it gives them more of a history to draw on when considering you for important loans like financing a new car or taking out a home loan. Avoid cards with annual fees or high APR's, and make sure you keep them open, either by using them occasionally (if they are for emergencies only, which they should be) or by calling your credit card company to make sure they know you still wish to keep your card open.

4) Be aware of your score. If you've gotten this far, you could probably already tell me what your FICO score is, which is a good thing. If you can't, you should head over to www.annualcreditreport.com, which will provide you with a free report of your credit standing (up to once every year under a new federal law). Another important thing to do when you get your credit report is to scan it for inaccuracies. They do happen, and can bring your score down by as many as a hundred points or more if you are not careful. If you see a discrepancy, call your credit card company to work something out. They will be forced to start an investigation into your claim.

5) Don't accept too many credit cards - or ask for too many credit line increases - in a short amount of time. When someone starts grabbing for credit like a chicken trying to keep it's eggs from being taken away, it makes the credit companies nervous. All sorts of scenarios start running through their heads (is he about to fake his death and buy an island somewhere?), and while they may be way off the mark, it'll end up hurting you financially. A six month cushion between any net credit increase is usually a good rule of thumb.

The main thing is to remain reliable and avoid giving credit card companies any reason to worry. Your FICO score will haunt you for the rest of your life, and while you can improve bad credit, it is much easier to start - and stick - with good credit.

How to save a Ton of money

Yahoo Finance has a list of ten money drains along with the annual costs of each of them. I view this as a list of where we all can save a bundle of money. Here's their list as well as the annual amounts spent on each of them (in other words, what you could save if you eliminated them):

1. Coffee -- $360 per year.
2. Cigarettes -- $1,660 a year.
3. Alcohol -- $3,650 per year.
4. Bottled water from convenience stores -- $365 per year.
5. Manicures -- $1,068 per year.
6. Car washes -- $348 per year.
7. Weekday lunches out -- $2,350 a year.
8. Vending machines snacks -- $260 per year.
9. Interest charges on credit card bills -- $4,868 in interest (over time).
10. Unused memberships -- $480 per year.


If you have a lot of bad credit loans probably you should consider the above tips to save a ton of money and improve your credit worthiness. Now of course I wouldn't suggest that someone cut out everything and eliminate all of life's pleasures. After all, we should use part of our money to enjoy ourselves. But for those people out there looking for a way to save a bit extra, for those who simply "can't make it on what I earn", and for those who would simply like to pay down their debt, this is a pretty good list to consider cutting down on -- even if it's for a short period of time. And you don't have to eliminate each of the items above, simply consider cutting back on them. There's still tons of savings available by cutting your car washes, manicures, or alcohol consumption in half.

Improve your finances

The American Bank Gold checking account for people over 50 years old offers a 5% APY for balances $10,000 - $99,999.99, guaranteed though March 31, 2008, plus a $20 bonus if I refer you. This is a nice account for foreign travel, as the bank does not charge for use of its ATM card worldwide. This is a checking account. The usual 6 withdrawals per month rule for money market accounts does not apply.


Comerica Bank is offering 1,000 Northwest Airlines miles to open a checking account, plus $25, $50, or $100 if you add some or all of Visa Check Card, Direct Deposit, Overdraft Protection, and/or Comerica Web Bill Pay.


US Bank offers 3 check (debit) cards.

The WorldPerks Visa Check Card costs $20/year and gets you 4,000 Northwest Airlines miles up front, plus 1 mile per $2 spent if you don't use a P.I.N. The 4,000 miles for $20 is a cheap half cent a mile, but of course, you would use a mileage producing credit card for non pin transactions, since it would probably produce more miles than would the debit card. The WorldPerks Visa Gold Check Card and the WorldPerks Visa Business Check Card cost $55/year and get you 5,000 Northwest Airlines miles up front for a cost of 1.1 cents per mile. But these cards offer 1 mile / $1 spent if you don't use a P.I.N. This could be useful for those who don't want or can't get a credit card


Bank of America does not offer miles for opening an account, but it does offer up front miles for buying a Visa check/debit card for one of their accounts. The annual fee is $30. Each card gives only 1 mile per $2 spent, so using a mileage producing credit card when possible would probably always be better mileagewise. But the up front miles might be worthwhile, depending on how you value your miles. Each card has its own cap on the number of miles you can earn each year

How to make easy money using Internet

1. Get a credit card with 12-month 0% APR balance transfer promotion

If the only purpose of getting a new card is to use the interest free period to make money, then length of the promotion period is the key. There are many cards offer a 12-month period with 0% introductory rate. Any period that’s shorter than 12 months is less desirable, unless you can use the card even without the 0% rate. For existing cards, however, a shorter term such as 9 months or 6 months is acceptable, but you need even larger amount to make up the fees. The shortest term I had was 4 months.

2. Request a convenient check to transfer balance

Not all issuers send out convenient checks right after the card is issued. If the promotion period starts from the time a balance is transferred, you can wait till the condition is right (such as the interest rate of your savings account if you expect it to go up in the coming months). I know Discover Card’s promotion starts when the card is issued. If that’s the case, do the transfer immediately after receiving the card.

To expedite the process, call the issuer when the card arrives and request a convenient check. It’s better to get a blank check, but there are credit card company requires your name and the amount you want to transfer be printed on the check before they can send it to you. Once the check is in, just deposit the money into your bank account.

3. Or make the transfer over the phone

If you feel comfortable, you also initiate the transfer on the phone and have the money sent to your bank account directly (you have to provide your bank’s routing number and your account number). I did that a couple of time with Bank of America and Chase which already have my bank information from the online bill pay.

Things will a lot easier if you transfer the money right to your bank account, but that’s not always the case. For instance, last year Discover insisted I can only use the money to pay balance on another credit card. If this is what’s happening, it’s less desirable but still doable if you have cards that can issue refund for over payment. Check out my previous post on how to use Citi card to transfer balance.

4. Consolidate credit limits to get the most out of the deal

It would be impossible for me to have $100K in balance transfer without some consolidations. If you have multiple accounts with the same issuer, you can get the most out of the deal by consolidating your existing credit limits. All you need to is call the credit card company and tell them to move credit lines from this and that card to the card with 0% offer. Just move the credit lines, but don’t close the accounts as they are likely to be older than the card you just got. When the game is over, you can always move the lines back to those cards if you wish. I have done credit consolidations before and it’s quite easy to do.

5. Don’t spend the money and don’t buy stocks with the money as well

Nobody can predict where the market will be one year from now. If you don’t have other funds to cover the balance when the transfer expires, you will have to sell your stocks which could be losing money at that time. Just save the money in a high yield savings account. There are plenty of online savings accounts offer 5+% interest rate. Keep the money in liquid accounts so you can have an easy access. In case something unexpected happens (like late in making payment), you can pay the money back right away.

6. Pay more than the minimum on time every month

If you are late in making minimum payment, even once, you are screwed. So make sure you give enough time to let your payment hit the card ahead of the deadline. And paying the bill online instead of mailing a check can reduce the risk of late payment. In addition, adding $10 more to the minimum payment is always a good practice.

7. Confirm the payoff date

Call the issuer one month early to confirm the last day the balance has to be paid off to avoid any financial charge. Don’t just assume the date on the offer letter is the deadline. Also, since transferring money via ACH usually requires at least three business days before the fund settles, give yourself enough time to arrange the money and pay off the entire balance without any delay.

Finally, there are a couple of items that you should be careful when playing the credit card arbitrage:

Think twice before getting a new card for balance transfer if the fee depends on the amount transferred (such as the 3% fee that Citi charges). The profit will be eroded even if you can get 5+% return from a savings account.
Make sure there’s no balance from purchases on the card before making the transfer. Since any payment you make will be automatically used to pay balance with the lowest interest rate, the charge from your regular purchase will started to accumulate interests until you pay off the entire balance, including that from 0% transfer. Edit: And don’t use the credit card until the balance transfer money is paid off either for the same reason (Thanks Tim ).
Read carefully the deadline on your offer letter. If it says something like “the billing cycle includes August 31, 2008,” then August 31, 2008 is NOT the deadline to pay off the balance and avoid financial charges. Depending on the date of your billing cycle, you may have to give the money back well ahead of August 31, 2008. Call the issuer to confirm the deadline.
